George W. Overton, 86, died June 15, 2004, in Park Ridge, Illinois. Born in Geneva, Illinois, he attended the Kent School in Connecticut and earned a bachelor's degree in geography at Harvard University. During World War II he served in the Army monitoring German communications for the Office of Strategic Services. He graduated from the University of Chicago Law School in 1946. He practiced law at Pope& Ballard. He was an advocate of professional ethics and social justice. He headed the Illinois Supreme Court Committee on Professionalism from 1990 to 1994. He wrote ethics columns for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and the CBA Record. In 1963 he was a founder of the Openlands Project. He was credited with helping to establish the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and  to protect the Illinois and Michigan Canal. A member of the Literary Club since 1989, he wrote three papers.
