Claude J.
Peck, Jr., aged 85, died October
21,2001, in Winnetka, Illinois. He overcame the loss of sight in his left eye
at 17 and polio at 21 during a summer bicycling trip in Europe. A 1939 graduate
of Yale University, Mr. Peck worked 42 years for Joseph T. Ryerson & Son, Inc. and Inland Steel Company where he was secretary of the Inland
Steel-Ryerson Foundation. It funded non-profit organizations involved with
education, social services and the arts. After he retired in 1981, Mr. Peck
joined the Executive Service Corp. of Chicago as a volunteer consultant. There
he continued his involvement with community groups, including Youth
Communications, the Highland Park Community Foundation and Piven Theatre
Workshop. He loved to read, to make furniture and to garden. A member of the
Club since 1994, he presented three papers.
